Work in progress…

During lockdown imposed by the Coronavirus, Francis has completed the short score of his three-movement Violin Concerto and is embarking on its orchestration (July 2020). Dedicated to his wife, this piece is inspired partly by happy memories of several months spent living in the Tuscan city of Florence during 1976, and of specific artefacts, churches, views and neighbourhoods to be found there.

Also completed is a 25-minute, 3-movement work for two pianos. First envisaged as long ago as 1994, when Francis was giving regular duo recitals with his longstanding friend and collaborator Jeremy Filsell, this piece will eventually be premiered by Francis and Jeremy in New York. Given that it is a ‘cycle made for two’, and also that it has appeared after a pause of only 26 years, inevitably it bears the title ‘Tandem’ (Latin for ‘at last’).
