‘Cello Sonata and ‘This is the Morning’, performed by Joseph Spooner with the composer, piano, Tuesday 2 April 2019

The fine British ‘cellist Joseph Spooner brings his inimitably expressive artistry to a performance of Francis Pott’s dramatic Sonata, written in 1995 as a memorial to his parents. The revised version dating from 2001 is presented in this recital. The Sonata is a major addition to the repertoire and has been described in the press as among the finest British chamber works of the 20th century. In this recital it is preceded by the premiere of ‘This is the Morning’, a privately-commissioned 9-minute work taking its title from a short poem by the late Dublin poet, Michael Hartnett.
