This work was commissioned for the choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, by Music at Oxford [1983]. Its texts are drawn from mediaeval poems by James Ryman, William Dunbar and anonymous writers, and are predominantly English but with intermittent 'macaronic' Latin refrains.
