SSS/SATB with divisions/organ
This anthem was commissioned by the Cathedral Foundation of
Salisbury in 1993 for the enthronement of the Right Reverend David Stancliffe as
Bishop, and sets a specifically requested text from the writings of the 8th
– 9th century English priest and scholar, Alcuin. The passage
extends a blessing (originally to Adelhard, Archbishop of Canterbury, 793-805)
and exhorts the recipient to Christian virtues. In addition to general vocal
divisions the music features a separate group, SSS, having originally responded
to a brief to involve Salisbury’s girl choristers alongside its boys and to
make spatial use of the Cathedral. There is also a substantial organ part. For information about the score of this work please visit
